The starting problem
Four properties: Zurich, Lucerne, Lausanne, Lugano. SEO habit had been: every mention goes to the brand root. Global boutique-hotel lists obliged. Swiss city queries still sent weekenders to OTAs and tourism boards.
City pages existed, then got rewritten. Citations did not follow. You cannot expect a destination URL to rank while every mention teaches the graph that the homepage is the product.
Seasonality mattered. The window included shoulder months so July noise would not be mistaken for method.
How the campaign ran
Each city became a mini-brief: URL, local queries, local desks. National Swiss travel titles only when the piece was genuinely about that city. Local magazines and papers in Zurich, Lausanne, and Ticino did more useful work than national “best hotels” lists.
Pitches offered reporting — neighbourhood walking notes, shoulder-season timing, family logistics an editor could keep. We did not ask for ranked competitor tables. We asked for a stay named where a stay belonged in the sentence.
Anchors used city language. Homepage links were allowed three times for genuine group profiles. Everything else targeted the city URL. That split is visible in the placement chart.
A national title with strong DR and a thin city section lost to a local magazine with a real archive. Local is what people searching that city already read.

What changed
Combined organic on the four city pages rose 48 percent. Loyalty-driven brand traffic was already strong and was not the object. Brand+city OTA leakage narrowed slightly on a few queries; we do not over-claim hotel attribution.
Twenty-nine city-desk placements. Three homepage-only links, intentional. Destination rankings improved where pages could compete with tourism boards and stalled where official guides were still denser — an on-site gap, not a link gap.
Content now finishes the city page before outreach starts. Pitch-first, page-later is how you earn mentions of empty templates.
Queries we tracked
Positions for the market named in the brief. A dash means the URL was outside the top 100 at the start.
| Query | Before | After | Move |
|---|---|---|---|
| hotel zürich see lage | #16 | #7 | +9 |
| où dormir lausanne week-end | #21 | #9 | +12 |
| hotel luzern seeufer | #18 | #8 | +10 |
| albergo lugano lago | #25 | #11 | +14 |
Prospects we turned down
- Global hotel round-ups aimed at the homepage.
- English travel blogs as a language proxy for Swiss city search.
- Paid “featured stay” sidebar modules.
A fifth city is planned. Outreach does not start until the Swiss URL looks like a page a magazine would recognise.
Homepage mentions feel efficient. They efficiently rank the wrong URL. Lakeside’s chart is almost all city pages because that is where the queries live.
